On-Site Home Energy Analysis

How much does an on-site analysis cost?

An on-site Home Energy Analysis costs $25. In most cases, the value of the improvements the analyst makes while on-site exceeds the cost of the analysis itself. Regardless, a customer's savings from completing the recommended improvements from a home energy analysis will pay for or equal the fee within a couple of utility bills. The $25 charge will appear on the customer's utility bill the month following the analysis appointment.

Who is eligible?

Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities residential customers who reside in single-family homes (who have their own heating/cooling and water heating systems) and have authorization to make minor changes as needed for energy efficiency are eligible to participate. You must have at least eight months of continuous utility service at your current home and you must not have had an On–Site Analysis or WeCare analysis at that same premise within the past 36 months. LG&E dual fuel customers must have had at least eight months of gas and electric service usage.

What knowledge will I gain from an analysis?

You will learn where and how you can save money on your energy usage. In addition, we will provide you with a detailed report that includes 'Proposed Improvements' and an analysis of projected energy savings in energy and dollars. Estimated costs and payback will be provided for each recommended measure. Additional information will be provided to support simple lifestyle behavior changes that can lead to immediate savings.

Each recommended improvement will be accompanied by expanded information on the subject. Infrared images will be provided when the temperature difference between the indoors and outdoors exceeds 16 to 18 degrees. Analysts are trained in the use and interpretation of infrared images, and they can help you understand the impact of heat gain (and heat loss) and the impact of air infiltration on your utility bills.

A complete health and safety profile will be provided on homes featuring gas combustion appliances. The on-site Home Energy Analysis is recommended to all customers prior to considering home improvements or appliance upgrades in the home.

Am I required to implement the recommendations?

No. However, when implemented, the recommended measures can save you energy — and energy dollars — year after year so they definitely benefit you in the long run.

What financial incentives are available to me if I do
make the recommended home improvements?

Electric service customers of LG&E and KU are eligible to apply for the on-site Home Energy Analysis financial incentives. LG&E gas-only customers do not qualify for the financial incentives under this program. Funding for incentives under the program comes from the Demand-Side Management charge to residential electric-only customers.

Qualifying customers who make the recommended home improvements will see the benefits of a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. Plus, starting in August 2012, electric customers who participate in the enhanced on-site Home Energy Analysis program may also be eligible for financial incentives. Customers who implement recommended energy-saving improvements resulting from the on-site Home Energy Analysis may be eligible to receive $500 (for achieving at least 20% in energy savings) or $1000 (for achieving 30% in energy savings) from LG&E and KU.

If you're considering an upgrade of your home's heating and cooling equipment, air sealing or insulation improvements, window or door upgrades (or any major purchase that impacts whole-house energy consumption), completing an on-site Home Energy Analysis before making the improvement(s) may help you qualify to receive the additional incentives.

For inspection of your installed measures and to determine qualification for the incentive payment, an analyst must revisit your home and perform a final verification inspection within 12 months from the date of the initial on-site Home Energy Analysis appointment. Results of this final inspection will determine your incentive eligibility.

How can I apply for the $500 or $1000 in incentives?

After you finish your home improvements, you must notify us online when you sign in or register your account, by phone (1-800-356-5467) or by email that you are ready for your final verification appointment. Once you request your verification appointment, our vendor, Honeywell, will contact you to review the energy-saving measures you have completed since the initial analysis and to schedule the final inspection of your home. You will have up to 12 months from your initial on-site Home Energy Analysis to make your home improvements and to schedule and complete the final verification analysis.

How do I apply for the incentive check?

You must first have had an on-site Home Energy Analysis (on or after January 1, 2011). A certified analyst will then visit your home for a follow-up appointment, verify installation of appliances and upgrades and re-test the home's air tightness if air-sealing or insulation were added. During this appointment, the analyst will be able to assess the energy savings associated with the completed improvement(s) and determine if you are eligible for monetary incentives.

All LG&E and KU residential electric customers who have at least eight months of continuous utility service at that premise — and who have not had an On-Site Home Energy Analysis or WeCare analysis at that premise within the past 36 months — are eligible for this program. Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities residential electric service customers who participated in this program since January 1, 2011 are eligible to apply for the incentives if their home improvements qualify.

How long to I have to make the recommended home improvements?

You have one year from your initial on-site Home Energy Analysis to complete your recommended home improvement measures and to request your final inspection.

What does it cost to have the final inspection?

There is no additional cost to you for the final inspection. The one-time fee of $25 which you paid when the initial analysis visit was performed covers the entire cost of the program.

What if my installed measures don't result in the promised 20% or 30% energy efficiency improvement? Am I still eligible for the $500 or $1,000?

By adhering to the recommendations in the initial analysis report you receive after your on-site Home Energy Analysis, you can ensure the implemented energy saving measures achieve the performance target. You may choose to pursue additional or alternative improvements not listed in the original analysis report; however, when you schedule your verification analysis, you must disclose to the program contractor all of the improvements you made.

Our program contractor will attempt to determine if the actual improvements you made achieve the minimum performance targets, but we cannot guarantee the final performance achieved until completion of the on-site verification analysis. The program contractor will complete only one verification analysis site visit. Manufacturer claims of energy savings do not guarantee incentive qualification. Final verification of savings rests with the program contractor, Honeywell.

I'm a renter. Am I eligible for the financial incentives if improvements are made to my home?

If you rent your property and your landlord paid for the improvements in your home, it is your responsibility to ensure the incentive payment is sent to the appropriate name and address. At the time of scheduling the verification analysis, you will be asked for the name and address where the incentive payment should be sent. In the event your landlord or property manager is to receive the payment, it is your obligation to provide this information to our program contractor.
