Economic Development Manager III
Daryl Smith works in Economic Development and Key Accounts with LG&E and KU Energy, and is based in Lexington, Kentucky. His primary duties include business recruitment and expansion, community development, project management and account management.
Smith is a Lexington native and has 37 years of experience in sales, marketing, customer service, and community relations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Kentucky and a master’s in management degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Smith is chair of Bluegrass Tomorrow and is affiliated with the Bluegrass Higher Education Consortium. He is immediate past chair of the Business and Education Network in Lexington and is the current treasurer for the organization. Smith is a board member and past president of the Somerset, Kentucky-based Southeast Kentucky Economic Development Corporation, and is vice chair of the YMCA of Central Kentucky. He is a member of the Bluegrass Kiwanis Club, where he achieved the designation of distinguished president. He serves as a board member of Commerce Lexington and was selected as Commerce Lexington Volunteer of the Year in 2007. He was selected as Commerce Lexington Public Policy Advocate of the Year for 2015. Smith was the 2010 chair of the Frankfort, Kentucky-based Kentucky Association for Economic Development (KAED) and was named KAED Allied Professional of the Year in 2005. He currently serves as chair of the KAED Foundation board of directors and is a board member of the Lexington Industrial Authority. Smith is also a board member of the World Trade Center of Kentucky. He previously served on the Bluegrass Workforce Investment Board as board chair, and was as an executive committee member of the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board. He previously served as chair of the Lexington Housing Authority board of commissioners and a term as board member of the Southeastern Employment and Training Association (SETA) in June 2016. Smith is a graduate of Leadership Lexington and Leadership Central Kentucky.
Smith is a graduate of the Kentucky Institute for Economic Development (KIED) and the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute (EDI). He has served as a KIED Instructor and currently helps coordinate KIED. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Midway University.
He is a Certified Economic Developer and holds membership in the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC), the Kentucky Association for Economic Development (KAED), and the Utility Economic Development Association (UEDA).
Smith is an energetic and insightful speaker and is recognized for having a passion for generating and facilitating the implementation of innovative ideas and strategies to help people, groups and communities reach their full potential.
He is a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Shiloh Baptist Church in Lexington. He and his wife, Danielle, have two children.
