Kentucky Utilities Company will join other local Earth and Arbor Day activities across the state by giving away free redbud tree seedlings. Mature eastern redbuds have pink/purple blossoms in the early spring and dot landscapes in Kentucky with beautiful color this time of year.
About 4,000 eastern redbud tree seedlings will be given away on April 26, at four business offices across the state. The locations and number of seedlings are:
- Eddyville, 219 West Main Street – 750 seedlings
- Morehead, 138 North Blair Avenue – 750 seedlings
- Maysville, 215 Wall Street – 1,500 seedlings
- Richmond, 200 Water Street – 1,000 seedlings
Customers may pick up two free seedlings beginning at 9 a.m. (Pickup at the Eddyville business office begins at 8 a.m.) Giveways will take place until the seedling supply lasts, usually until late morning.
The giveaway program is one way our company supports the Call Before You Dig (811) initiative and encourages planting native trees in appropriate locations through The Right Tree in The Right Place program.
Falling tree limbs on lines is one of the major causes of power outages. The eastern redbud is a relatively small tree when it reaches maturity, so planting that tree in the right place means the tree will grow without limbs reaching the electric lines. A brochure that describes Right Tree, Right Place and the Plan Before You Plant recommendations will be given to customers along with the seedlings.
Also, by planting the seedlings in the proper location, as they get larger they can provide shade for houses which, over the long term, will help reduce energy costs.
Our tree seedling giveaway program started in the early 1990s and over that time, nearly 750,000 free seedlings have been given to customers across the LG&E and KU service territory.
