Many kids look forward to back-to-school shopping, picking out colorful binders, crayons, pencils and even a new backpack to start off the school year. Yet for thousands of children across Kentucky, shopping for school supplies can be a financial burden on families.
“Imagine what the first day of school is like for children with little or no supplies. That can shatter their confidence and ability to start the year on solid footing,” said the energy company’s treasurer, Dan Arbough, who co-chairs the company’s employee-giving campaign for 2017. “By filling backpacks, we help fill the gap and give all children better opportunities to succeed in the classroom.”
So, to make sure students start the 2017-2018 school year off on the right foot, LG&E and KU has partnered with Meijer for backpack giveaways in August. Nearly 100 LG&E and KU employees and family members will assemble thousands of backpacks with essential supplies. This year, to best serve those families in need of the supplies, LG&E will deliver backpacks direct to community partners who will each hold their own backpack distributions ahead of the start to the school year. Current plans are as follows:
The Lord’s Kitchen – Backpacks will be distributed daily from Wednesday, August 2 until the first day of school, while supplies last. One backpack will be given per child on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Supplies can be picked up behind the building located at 1811 Standard Ave.
Feed the City – A single day backpack distribution will be held Saturday, Aug. 12 at 1100 S. 26th Street from 11 a.m. until supplies run out. One backpack will be given per child on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
