Renewable Choice Calculator enables LG&E and KU customers to meet sustainability goals at minimum cost

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) — When it comes to energy use, residents and businesses alike are increasingly searching for solutions to help meet their personal or professional sustainability goals and support renewable energy generation. In an effort to make meeting those goals as easy and cost-efficient as possible, Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company are rolling out a new tool called the Renewable Choice Calculator (RCC).

Accessible from the LG&E and KU website, the calculator does the heavy lifting for customers exploring their sustainability options. By inserting a few details — including customer type and average monthly bill — the calculator uses the utilities’ Solar Share Program and Green Energy Program to provide a solution that enables most customers to support renewables at a level that is equal to 100% of their power consumption for less than $1 per day or about 5% more on their monthly energy bill.

The calculator combines shares from LG&E and KU’s Solar Share Program and blocks from the utilities’ Green Energy Program to provide a combined solution for customers who want to support both local community solar and regional renewables.

“Creating tools and program offerings that are convenient and help our customers achieve their energy-related goals is one of our top priorities,” said LG&E and KU Vice President-Customer Services Eileen Saunders. “The Renewable Choice Calculator is one more tool in our full portfolio of sustainability programs and initiatives that provides information, simplifies the process and helps many customers realize how investing in renewables is a more tangible option than they might have assumed.”

A sweet deal

Century-old Louisville staple Muth’s Candies on Market Street in NuLu is the first commercial business to take advantage of the tool and sign up to support 100% renewables.

“When we used the calculator, plugged in our information and saw that going renewable wasn’t going to add much to our monthly bill, it was a no-brainer,” said Muth’s office manager, Arthur Blazin. “It’s an easy way for us to invest in something we believe in and make a difference by reducing our carbon footprint.”
The business is supporting solar and wind generation for about 3.5% of its typical monthly bill. As a business with a 100-year-old legacy, Muth’s says supporting renewables is a move that will enhance the longevity of its business, the environment and the community.

“Change is inevitable, and we have to embrace it,” said Blazin. “This tool makes it easy. I hope others will use it as well.”
