Birds on the wing: Our falcon friends return for another nesting season

March 22, 2024

Our live falcon cam at the Mill Creek Generating Station is up and running for another peregrine falcon nesting season.

For more than two decades, we have partnered with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to help protect the state’s peregrine falcons. As part of that program, we have established nesting boxes – maintained by employee volunteers – at several of our generating stations. Those boxes provide the falcons a perfect location in which to raise their families and thrive in a safe environment.

The Mill Creek falcon cam is focused on one of our nesting boxes, capturing the excitement of the journey from the time eggs are laid to the moment the new chicks leave the nest. Return viewers might also recognize Diana, the resident peregrine falcon and her longtime mate Perry the Peregrine. The live cam allows you to follow along each step of the way.

Nearly 200 chicks have fledged from nesting boxes placed at LG&E and KU generating stations over the past 20-plus years. In 2023, eight peregrine falcons nested at the Mill Creek, Trimble County and Ghent generating stations.
