Keep cool and keep your monthly bill under control

The heat is just getting started, which means more work for your air conditioner – and a possible uptick in your monthly energy bill. You want to keep comfortable without too much strain on your checkbook. Here are a few tips that can help.

  • Keep blinds, curtains and shades closed during the hottest part of the day. That’ll help keep some of the heat out and keep the AC from running as much.
  • Set any ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise. Remember to shut them off when you leave the room – they only cool people, not rooms.
  • Make sure registers are unblocked. And give them a good dusting to help improve the airflow.
  • Think about getting some reflective film or sun control for your windows (especially the ones that face south and west) to reduce the penetration of summer heat.
