Safety is the foundation for all we do at LG&E and KU. We offer safety tips and information to ensure you, your family members and friends, our employees and business partners remain safe each and every day.

Safety starts with awareness and preparation. By following these tips, you can help prevent injuries, outages and property damage while enjoying your outdoor projects.  

Plan Before You Start  
  • Take time to understand the scope of your project before starting work.
  • Be aware of nearby power lines, underground utilities and equipment.
  • Use tools and extension cords designed specifically for outdoor use.  
Electrical Safety Around Your Home  
  • Always assume overhead power lines are energized and dangerous.
  • Use wood or fiberglass ladders and keep them far from power lines.
  • Never touch or tamper with pad-mounted transformers (green utility boxes).

Be safe during inclement weather that may cause service outages.

There is no time like the present to prepare yourself and those in your care for emergencies and disasters.

Contact 811 before performing any excavation work. 811 will coordinate with member utilities to mark any underground utility lines in the area.

Safe use of electricity can prevent fires in your home and injuries to your family.

If you suspect a natural gas leak, ALWAYS leave the area immediately.

As damage prevention champions, LG&E is focused on educating the professional excavator community about 811 – a FREE statewide service. Kentucky law requires anyone who plans to move dirt to submit a locate request to 811 before digging. Know the ground rules. Remember, 811 before you dig.

When flood waters threaten homes, customers wonder how to ensure the safety of their appliances and their gas and electric service in case their home floods.
