Louisville Gas and Electric and KU supplying more than 14,000 backpacks to Kentucky students

August 13, 2010

With the start of school upon us, LG&E and KU employees are stepping up once again to provide hard-pressed families in the communities we serve with needed school supplies.

The goal is to make sure area students enter the classroom with the essential materials they need to go back to the classroom prepared for success on day one.

For the last nine years, LG&E employees and The Lord's Kitchen, a charitable organization that feeds the hungry and homeless in Louisville, have spearheaded Louisville's annual supply drive.

With the help of the our Generation Services Department, Feed the City and Walmart, the 2010 School Supply Drive will distribute more than 3,000 backpacks at two locations tomorrow in Louisville.

Each backpack we give away will include paper, pocket folders, glue sticks, pencils and other supplies. Our employee volunteers are meeting later today to stuff the backpacks in preparation for tomorrow’s drive.

Where to find us tomorrow (Aug. 14)

Volunteers will distribute backpacks at two locations:

11:30 a.m. – The Pavilion at Parkway Place; Building 23, Brashear Drive (click here for directions)

Noon – 3050 W. Broadway (click here for directions)

Backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Louisville effort is one of many around the state

In addition to the Aug. 14 event in Louisville, our employees have helped sponsor and fund many other back-to-school supply drives in several Kentucky counties. In sum, more than 14,000 backpacks will be distributed through our companies’ collective efforts.

For instance, an additional 800 backpacks will be sent to various Jefferson County Public Schools and their resource centers this coming Monday, Aug. 16.

Last week, 2,750 backpacks were distributed to students in Meade County, Bullitt County, Carroll County and Harrodsburg.

An additional 8,000 backpacks were distributed in 21 Lexington neighborhoods as part of the annual "Ready, Set, Go! Neighborhood Back-to-School Rallies." The event was coordinated by the non-profit organization LexLinc and sponsored by Kentucky Utilities Company.

This is an exciting time of year for children and parents alike, but it can also bring anxiety and apprehension. Together with others in our community, we want to do our part to help families begin the school year on the right foot.
