Our employees are making healthy choices

November 23, 2010
A shout-out goes to LG&E and KU employees who are making healthier choices and pursuing wellness opportunities through our company’s wellness program. Because of these efforts, Business First has given LG&E and KU the Healthiest Employers Award for companies with 1,500– 4,999 employees.

Wellness is a top priority at our company. We know that healthy employees make for productive employees who need to be at the top of their game to serve our customers’ 24/7 energy needs. When our employees take advantage of the company’s many wellness programs, they’re taking ownership of their health and making lifestyle improvements that will enhance their lives at work and at home.

Beginning in January of each year, we offer free health fairs at company facilities so our employees can get a number of screenings to check blood pressure, body mass index, blood tests and body fat screenings. Last year, we introduced prostate cancer screenings, which actually helped save the lives of two of our employees. In both cases, the men’s tests showed abnormal levels of prostate-specific antigens, or PSA. Our two veteran employees went to their doctors, were treated for prostate cancer — with successful results — and returned to work just six weeks later.

In addition to health fairs, we offer flu shot clinics, free mammograms, partial reimbursement at fitness centers and a family assistance program that focuses on mental and emotional wellness.

We have a strong, dedicated work force. It’s good to know that the company is taking care of us, so we can continue to help our customers and our communities 365 days of the year.
