Supplying students with success

January 29, 2014
It’s hard to get through a school day if a student is constantly searching for a pen and piece of paper. Unfortunately, supplies start to dwindle half way through the school year. Recognizing a need, Cane Run employees packed an SUV with boxes of school supplies and headed over to Cane Run Elementary School.

The school’s principal, resource coordinator and a handful of eager fifth graders welcomed them with open arms as the employees rolled in box after box of supplies to replenish the school’s inventory as the second half of the academic year
kicks into gear.

Though the backpacks, notebooks, papers and other items are basic necessities for learning, keeping them stocked allows students to focus on the lessons at hand, and teachers and administrators to concentrate on the best ways to enrich these young minds. It’s a delivery made possible thanks to a partnership with Wal-mart.

“Each of these students is a sponge — ready and waiting to soak up the information they’re taught here at school,” said Laura Douglas, vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs. “Our long-standing relationship with Cane Run Elementary is about supporting students on their education journey, and putting the tools they need to succeed in their hands.”
Thursday afternoon’s special delivery is part of a 15-year partnership between the Cane Run plant and elementary school to enhance students’ learning environment. In the last decade alone, the two groups have worked together to help develop the school’s environmental magnet program, construct its playground, and provide school supplies and other resources and basic necessities.

School administrators say they are thrilled with the opportunities the relationship has created and are identifying new ways to partner with Cane Run Station to benefit students into the future.
