Your monthly bill: What is DSM?

April 3, 2020

Each month, if you are a KU or LG&E customer, you will see a line item on your bill under Current Charges for Electric DSM. (If you are a natural gas customer, there is also a line item for Gas DSM – which could be a charge or a credit.) That is a charge to cover the costs of providing our Demand-Side Management energy-efficiency programs, including:

  • WeCare
    • Savings are created through weatherization and energy education to help eligible low-income   customers.
  • Residential Demand Conservation
    • Devices attached to air conditioners or heat pumps allow units to be cycled off and on for brief periods during “peak” summer days. Participating customers could receive a $5 credit.
  • Large Nonresidential Demand Conservation
    • This customized energy-reduction plan – provided at no additional cost and with potential monetary incentives – helps reduce energy load.
  • Nonresidential Rebates
    • Commercial and industrial customers earn cash rebates for making energy-saving improvements.

These programs benefit customers, especially some of our most vulnerable customers; offer cost-effective energy-efficiency choices; and provide incentives to engage customers.
