Company wins HIRE Vets military veteran hiring award

November 9, 2020

LG&E and KU Energy has been honored by the U.S. Department of Labor for military veteran staffing by winning the 2020 Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans (HIRE Vets) Medallion Award. The company won a Gold Medallion in the large — 500+ employees — employer category.

The HIRE Vets Medallion is the only federal award recognizing exceptional achievement in veteran employment. The award criteria allow for the highest level of recognition for employers who are committed to veteran careers, including recruiting, employment and retention. According to the Department of Labor, the award signals to veterans that "an employer is committed to and supports our nation's heroes," and by meeting the criteria for the Gold Medallion, LG&E and KU "demonstrated both patriotism and recognition of the value veterans bring to the workplace."

Medallion recipients attested in their award applications to meeting the rigorous employment and veteran integration assistance criteria, including veteran hiring and retention percentages; availability of veteran-specific resources; leadership programming for veterans; dedicated human resource efforts; and/or compensation and tuition assistance programs for veterans.

According to Vice President-Human Resources Greg Meiman, the award demonstrates the company's dedicated commitment to hiring military veterans and ensuring they have the resources and support available to succeed in their jobs. "We're proud of our outreach to veterans as potential employees and the resources we offer veteran employees, such as our AFEP business resource group and the educational and leadership training offerings available to them," said Meiman. "It's gratifying that our efforts are being recognized nationally."
