There goes winter, here comes spring, and storms are on the menu

March 2, 2022

Winter is waning (hopefully), and spring is in sight. Changes in weather patterns from cold air to warm air can mean violent weather like what many Kentuckians experienced in December. While we have made significant investments to strengthen our electric system, power outages are possible during or after extreme weather events. Make sure you’re ready for severe weather that might strike when you least expect it.

  • Prepare an emergency kit with:
    • Nonperishable food
    • Water
    • Battery-operated radio (consider getting a National Oceanic and Atmospheric  Administration – NOAA – Weather Radio so you can get weather warnings)
    •  Flashlights
    • Extra batteries
    • First-aid kit (including prescription medicines)
    • Battery-powered charger for cellphones
  • Download our mobile app to easily report and receive updates on power outages. (Use the QR codes in this newsletter.) If you prefer, you can text us at 454385 (4LGEKU) to report or track the status of an outage. Check your mobile phone number in My Account now before severe weather hits.
  • Turn off all your appliances but leave a light switch on so you’ll know when the power returns.
  • Make sure your car has at least a half tank of gas.
  • Designate a place to go in the event of an extended power outage.
  • Don’t use corded phones and don’t take a bath or shower during a storm.

And remember to avoid downed lines. If you see a downed line, call us. Visit lge-ku.com for more information about our mobile app and outage texting. Visit weather.gov/safety for more tips on preparing for severe weather.
