There’s plenty of winter left, so be ready

December 19, 2023

When the winter wind howls and the snow piles up, make sure you are prepared and can stay safe in the event of a power outage. Here are a few things you can get ready beforehand to avoid being caught by surprise:

  • Emergency kit – At minimum it should include a flashlight, extra batteries, a battery-operated radio and first-aid materials. (And don’t forget any prescription medicines.)
  • Nonperishable food – Bagged snacks and canned goods. (Remember to throw in a can opener if you need one.) Extra tip: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. That will help protect your perishable food.
  • Candles and/or lanterns (and matches) – Make sure you don’t use them near any flammable materials such as drapes or curtains. Don’t leave them unattended while burning.
  • Portable cellphone charger – Make sure it’s charged and ready to go.

You can easily report – and get updates about – a power outage by downloading our free mobile app or by searching “LG&E KU ODP” in app stores. You can also report an outage via text at 4LGEKU (454358) and text STATUS to get updates. Make sure your cellphone number is up to date in your online account (My Account), too.

Finally, never ever go near a downed power line. If you see one, call us to report it.
