Brrr-illiant ways to stay safe and save energy during extreme cold weather

January 8, 2025

With dangerously cold temperatures now settling into our region and more snow predicted, we are prepared and want you to be ready, too.

Our robust and reliable system is designed to withstand extreme conditions, and our ongoing investments and maintenance in our electric and natural gas infrastructure help us deliver on our commitment of providing you with safe, reliable and affordable energy around the clock.

Here are some simple tips to help you stay safe, save energy and be more comfortable during extreme winter weather.

  • Lower your thermostat. Every degree you lower your thermostat can save you up to 3% on your heating bill. Consider setting your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting when you're home and awake, and lower it even more when you're asleep or away from home.
  • Let the sunshine in. Open your curtains and blinds during the day to let the sun warm your home naturally. Close them at night to help insulate your windows and keep the heat in.
  • Seal up air leaks. Drafty windows and doors can let out a lot of heat. Seal up any cracks or gaps with weatherstripping or caulk to keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
  • Use your ceiling fan. Did you know your ceiling fan can help circulate warm air in the winter? Just switch the direction of your fan to clockwise and run it on low speed to push warm air down from the ceiling.
  • Layer up. Wearing layers of clothing can help you stay warm without having to crank up the heat.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors: Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector installed on every level of your home, especially around sleeping areas, and test them every month. Same for smoke detectors!
  • Cozy up safely with space heaters: Give your space heater some space! Keep it at least 3 feet away from anything flammable, plug it directly into the wall, and never leave it on unattended. Place it on a stable surface, and always turn it off and unplug it when you're done.
