Nearly 250 Louisville homes weatherized during 20th annual Winter Blitz

November 29, 2010

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) Hundreds of Louisville homes will be warmer this winter, thanks in part to another successful year for the Project Warm Blitz.

In continued support and solidarity for the 20th annual event, nearly 225 Louisville Gas and Electric Company employees and their families joined various businesses, schools, churches and community organizations Nov. 6 and 13 to weatherize homes for low-income senior and disabled residents.

Starting out at LG&E's Broadway Office Complex, 136 five-person teams of volunteers collected their weatherization supplies of heavy plastic window sheeting, tape, tacks, outlet insulators and rope caulk before venturing out to designated homes throughout Louisville over two Saturdays.

Team leaders also participated in weatherization training prior to the Blitz to better assess the homes' needs and to help educate the homeowners about other simple steps they can take to make their home more energy efficient and safer for them and their families. As a complement to the Blitz, an outpouring of LG&E volunteers associated with the company's annual "Day of Caring" increased company participation by nearly 25 percent — making 43 teams participating in the event.

Project Warm estimates these basic techniques can help clients save up to 25 percent on their heating bills.

"We've been a strong supporter of Project Warm and the important services this organization provides to our community since its inception almost 30 years ago, and thousands of homes have been made more energy efficient thanks to these weatherization efforts," said John P. Malloy, LG&E and KU's Vice President of Energy Delivery — Retail Services.
