21st annual Project Warm Blitz set for Nov. 5 and 12
November 2, 2011LOUISVILLE, Ky. - More than 650 pairs of helping hands will warm the homes of more than 300 low-income elderly and disabled residents as part of the 21st annual Project Warm Blitz.
The Blitz will be held Nov. 5, and Nov. 12. Volunteers — working in teams of up to five people — plan to weatherize more than 300 homes in this year's effort, supported by hundreds of Louisville Gas and Electric Company employees and their families.
Volunteers will focus on applying simple weatherization techniques, including hanging interior plastic on windows. Project Warm estimates these basic measures can help clients save up to 20 percent on heating bills.
"A home that lacks sufficient insulation increases energy use year-round, particularly during the winter months, and that translates into higher energy bills," said Frank Schwarz, Executive Director of Project Warm. "As the bulk of our clients are on a fixed-income, any savings realized by the work performed by Blitz volunteers goes a long way."
John P. Malloy, LG&E and KU's Vice President of Energy Delivery — Retail Services, added: "We've been a proud partner of Project Warm since their inception in 1982, and the collective efforts of our volunteers throughout the years keep this important initiative going strong. As the Blitz celebrates its 21st birthday, we'll be joining forces once again with other community volunteers to make homes more energy efficient."
Teams will gather both Saturdays at LG&E's Broadway Office Complex, 820 W. Broadway, around 8:30 a.m. where they will be given weatherization materials before heading to their assigned residences.
