LG&E and KU employees weatherize homes for utilities’ Day of Caring

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) – With increasingly colder temperatures across the Bluegrass and winter quickly approaching, making sure homes are prepared for the season is critical. To help those most in need of assistance, dozens of employees of Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company are participating in events weatherizing about 300 homes in Louisville and Lexington.

The employees’ volunteer efforts are part of LG&E and KU’s annual Day of Caring. This is the largest annual volunteer initiative led by the utilities and is part of the LG&E and KU annual employee giving campaign called Power of One, which brings together monetary giving and volunteer work.

This year, LG&E and KU employees are joining forces with longtime partners – volunteering during the 27th Project Warm Blitz in Louisville and Community Action Council’s 13th WinterBlitz in Lexington. Teams of employees, along with their family and friends, are preparing residents’ homes for winter by using weatherization techniques like sealing up leaky areas around doors and windows with tape, plastic and foam rope.

“These are simple techniques, but they go a long way toward helping the residents we’re visiting to stay warm and better manage both their home’s energy use and energy bills,” said LG&E and KU Treasurer and co-chair of the 2017 Power of One campaign Dan Arbough. “Unifying our volunteer efforts like this for Day of Caring with our community partners increases our ability to assist as many residents as possible.”

Both events are being held on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Project Warm Blitz will weatherize a second round of homes on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The efforts of many, the Power of One

Since 2005, the utilities’ annual Power of One campaign has raised more than $19.6 million to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout Kentucky.

Nearly 67 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in Power of One through payroll deduction — a participation rate more than twice the national average.
