Volunteers install energy-efficient porch lights during annual Day of Caring
(LEXINGTON, Ky.) – Kentucky Utilities employees today joined the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Lexington Police Department for Operation Porch Light. The event involves a volunteer effort to install energy-efficient porch lights to help increase safety and help customers save energy. The event is part of KU’s 15th annual Day of Caring.
“This is about helping the community we serve, and it’s as simple as providing and installing LED lightbulbs for folks who need them,” said Robert Trimble, LG&E and KU director of Electric Distribution. “Not only are LEDs more energy efficient, they have much longer lifespans than typical incandescent bulbs, offering better safety that comes with well-lit communities.”
This year’s Day of Caring event focused on installing the LEDs in light fixtures on the front porches of homes in Lexington’s Winburn neighborhood.
“This is a perfect example of being responsive to the needs of our community,” said Fayette County Sheriff Kathy Witt. “Partnering with other agencies such as the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky Utilities helps us to promote public safety and embody the cooperative spirit that makes Fayette County a great place to live and work.”
The Day of Caring is one component of KU and its sister utility, Louisville Gas and Electric Company’s, annual employee-giving campaign called Power of One, which brings together monetary giving and volunteer work benefitting the communities they serve.
Last year, LG&E and KU’s Power of One Campaign raised more than $2 million thanks to voluntary contributions from employees and additional support from the LG&E and KU Foundation. Since 2005, the employee-driven campaign has raised nearly $24 million through payroll deductions, event fundraisers, retiree donations and support from IBEW Local 2100 and the LG&E and KU Foundation. Nearly 70 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in the campaign through recurrent payroll deductions.
