LG&E and KU Electric Vehicle Fast-Charging Site Partner Application Request

Electric vehicles (EVs) are here, and Kentucky is ready to get charged up! The Governor’s recent announcement for new EV battery manufacturing site in Glendale, KY signals that the future of the electric automotive industry is happening in our backyard. Now is the time to take advantage of this unique opportunity to help lead the EV movement in the Commonwealth.

Overview

Benefits to the EV fast-charging site partner

Traffic flow

Businesses and public organizations selected to host a fast-charging station will experience the benefits of increased traffic flow from potential patrons who will spend time exploring the area during the charging period. Many drivers go out of their way to shop or visit a location with an EV charging station.

Sustainability strategy

Adding charging stations will contribute to your company’s overall sustainability strategy. In a 2017 study conducted by Cone Communications where more than 1,000 Americans were polled about corporate social responsibility, the following were noted:

  • 87% of consumers will have a more positive view of a company that supports social or environmental issues.
  • 88% will be more loyal to a company that supports social or environmental issues.
  • 87% would buy a product with a social and environmental benefit, if given the opportunity.

Equipment

LG&E and KU plan to offer direct-to-consumer charging services at these stations under the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved rate of $0.25 per kWh (plus taxes and fees). Each site will be capable of charging at least four vehicles at speeds of at least 150 kW or a single vehicle at 350 kW. This translates to more than 300 miles of range to a customer’s EV in less than an hour.

Property Requirements

Below are the minimum site requirements for interested businesses or public areas.

  • Must be owned by a commercial or industrial customer within the LG&E and KU service territories in Kentucky.
  • Parking space must be large enough to accommodate four vehicles charging simultaneously plus the supporting equipment. The total area necessary is equivalent to that of approximately eight parking spaces, four for vehicle charging and four for supporting equipment. Note that supporting equipment may be located on adjacent parking island or grassy area to avoid additional parking spot utilization.
  • Must be located within target location zones and within close proximity to items of interest for the EV driver.
  • Charging area must be well-lit and provide the user with a safe, comfortable experience at all hours of the day and week.

Construction Process

LG&E and KU will assume responsibility for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the EV fast-charging station working with internal departments and external partners.
