Hurricane Helene

Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024 – 2:00 p.m. (EDT) Restoration Update

crew preparing to repair power line

Please be safe as the communities we’re proud to serve continue to experience significant impacts from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, which brought heavy rain, flooding and wind gusts of 60 mph+ to our service area.

Our crews continue to work safely and as quickly as possible to restore power to all remaining customers. We’re continuing to update estimated restoration times based on crews’ feedback in the field and the level of damage our crews are finding at customers’ properties. We appreciate your patience and encourage customers to continue checking our online outage map for the latest updates

Please continue to stay away from downed lines – always assume they could be energized and report them to us immediately.

As of 2 p.m. (EDT), here’s the latest information on the impacts of Hurricane Helene across our service area:

  • More than 224,000 customers so far have been impacted systemwide since midnight Sept. 27.

  • In terms of total impact, this now ranks as the 4th largest event for LG&E and KU over the last 20 years.

  • Currently, crews are working to finish restoring power to the Norton, Virginia area due to access issues in one of the hardest hit areas of our service territory.

  • Heavy rain and strong winds downed nearly 1,600 wires and broke more than 160 poles (these numbers will increase as damage continues to be assessed).

  • We released some of our contract resources to support AEP and Georgia Power to help them finish their restoration efforts.
