Ewe’ll be glad to know our sheep have returned

The return of spring means the return of our flock of sheep to maintain the vegetation around the solar field at the E.W. Brown Generating Station in Harrodsburg, Ky. The flock, which totals more than 200 sheep, will eat its way around the 50-acre site between now and autumn, helping maintain the vegetation in a more environmentally friendly fashion. Vegetation growth needs to be kept under control so the solar panels can operate as efficiently as possible. The sheep will return to their home at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in the fall.

The sheep are joined by two Great Pyrenees – Willow and Maple – whose primary duty is to protect the flock from possible predators, such as coyotes. The specially trained dogs are also the property of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.
