In the electric panel in your home, there are various breakers that will shut off power to certain rooms or appliances. They allow you to turn off the electricity to certain locations for repairs or projects while not impacting the whole house. However, it is safer to shut off the main breaker when doing any electrical work on your home. The main breaker is usually located at the top of the electric panel. It shuts off electricity throughout your home – from computers to HVAC units. 

Electric panels are generally found in basements or garages or near laundry rooms or water heaters. For the safest option, we recommend – unless you are experienced working with electricity – you have a professional electrician handle any electrical work.
