Summer is the season to enjoy time outside with friends and family. But there’s always the chance that severe storms could ruin the fun. With June being National Safety Month, here are some helpful tips to help keep your summer safe.
- Assemble an emergency kit if you haven’t already, including water, nonperishable foods, first-aid items, a cell phone charger, a weather radio and extra batteries.
- Do not take a bath or shower during a storm.
- Shut off appliances and electronics. (Keep a light switch on so you know when power is restored in the event of an outage.)
- Keep at least a half tank of gas in your car.
- Have a plan for a place to stay if there is an extended emergency.
Lost power and need to report an outage? Be sure to use our mobile app. (Download the app or search “LG&E KU ODP” via the App Store or Google Play.) You can also text OUTAGE to 454358 (4LGEKU). Text STATUS for updates.
Also, be sure any flammable liquids (gas, paint thinner, etc.) are stored outside your home, in proper containers and out of reach of children.
Finally, always stay away from downed power lines. If you see one, call us immediately.
Storm Investments
During the severe weather and tornadic events in early April, we saw direct benefits from advanced technology investments in our system. Drones were used to assess damage at night in difficult-to-access areas. New AMI meters sent us data automatically, helping us confirm which customers were restored after specific repairs, making outage restoration more efficient. Additionally, about 10% of customers affected were restored remotely using smart-grid capability that was implemented in 2023. Learn more on how we are empowering our customers with smart investments.
