Trick or treat? We’ll help you decide what’s a scam

October is the month for tricks and treats, but it’s important to know the difference. This is also true when it comes to keeping your accounts safe and secure from potential scammers and fraud. These baddies are always cooking up new schemes to steal your money, so here’s some advice to help avoid their traps.

Remember that we’ll NEVER:

  • Make a live or automated call demanding payment.
  • Send a representative to your home to demand payment.
  • Threaten to cut off service if immediate payment isn’t made.
  • Call and ask for credit card, debit card, checking account or other personal information.
  • Request payment via prepaid debit card or gift cards.

If you receive a call from anyone claiming to be with our company and they demand immediate payment, you can be sure it’s a scam (even if the caller ID says it’s us). Hang up right away.

To help protect our customers, we work diligently with telephone companies to disconnect numbers associated with these criminals. We also report fraudulent websites to authorities (including law enforcement and the state attorney general’s office) for removal.

The best way to ensure your bill gets paid securely is to use My Account, our mobile app (download it by searching “LG&E KU ODP” in app stores), or our automated phone system. You can also check your balance 24/7 via My Account, through our mobile app or by calling our automated line and pressing 1-2-1.

Suspect you’ve recently fallen victim to a utility scam? Report it to your local police immediately and then let us know.
