Know your gas lines

Company-owned natural gas lines (yellow):

We own and regularly inspect the gas lines up to and including the gas meter. Learn more about our gas safety inspections, curb valve inspections and atmospheric corrosion inspections.

Customer-owned natural gas lines (red):

You own and should regularly inspect the gas lines from your meter to your gas appliances in your home or facility. You may also have buried customer-owned natural gas lines that could serve grills, pool heaters, generators or other outdoor appliances. Be sure that you’re aware of all the natural gas lines inside and outside your home or facility. Licensed plumbing, heating and mechanical contractors can assist you in inspecting, locating and/or repairing (if needed) customer-owned gas piping.

Excess flow valves:

An excess flow valve (EFV) is a device LG&E can install on the natural gas service line, which is the underground gas line that runs from the gas main to your meter. If your service line is damaged and broken, an EFV will automatically shut off the flow of natural gas. This will prevent natural gas from escaping from the damaged section of the service line and reduce the chances of an accidental ignition. Learn more about excess flow valves.

Contact 811 before any digging:

Before you start any project that requires digging, contact 811 to mark all underground utility lines, including outside natural gas lines. Accidentally digging into underground utility lines can cause serious injury, service interruptions, costly repair bills or even death. Kentucky law requires all excavators, including homeowners, to contact operators of underground utilities before performing any excavation work.

Please note some underground lines – private lines/customer-owned gas lines – are not marked by Kentucky 811. Examples of these private lines are electric or water lines to a pool or sprinkler system, lines to septic tanks, electric lines to sheds, landscape lighting or invisible pet fences, gas lines to a grill, etc. As a general rule, if the line runs from the street to the meter, and is owned by a Kentucky 811 member, it will be marked. If the utility line is installed from the meter to another location on your property, it will not be marked. It is your responsibility to contact a private locating company to mark private lines.
