Position testing information

Construction and skilled trades (CAST)

The Construction and Skilled Trades Selection System (CAST) test is used to help select candidates for construction and skilled trade positions in the following areas: electric transmission and distribution, substation maintenance, facilities and equipment, and meter reader service and repair. This test measures skills and abilities critical for effective job performance in the following areas: ​ math problem-solving using information from prints and drawings, mechanical principle comprehension, and reading comprehension.

Maintenance operations (MASS)

The Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selection System (MASS) test is used to help select candidates for the following maintenance jobs: plant mechanic, instrumentation specialist, electrician, welder, gas system maintenance. This test measures skills and abilities critical for effective job performance in the following areas:  the proper assembly of objects, understanding mechanical principles, reading comprehension, and basic math.

Plant operations (POSS)

The Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) test is used to help select candidates for operating power plants and compressor stations.  This test measures skills and abilities critical for effective job performance in the following areas: the proper assembly of objects, understanding mechanical principles, reading comprehension, basic math, and speed and accuracy in reading tables and graphs.

Technician occupations (TECH)

The Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) test is used to help select candidates for technical occupations in the following areas: laboratory technicians, telecommunications, engineering design, drafting, GIS, and testing and relay technicians. This test measures skills and abilities critical for effective job performance in the following areas: math problem-solving  using information from prints and drawings, understanding mechanical principles, ability to use symbols and codes to locate objects on a map or diagram or to determine an object’s status, and make decision-making  or troubleshooting through rules application.

Test Prep Resources

To increase your familiarity with these tests, the Edison Electric Institute has developed sample practice tests to help you understand what to expect from them. The practice tests will differ from the actual tests, but answers and explanations are provided at the end of each practice test for your review.

Retake policy

If you are not selected for a position because of your test results, you are not eligible to retake the same test within 90 days of the test date. To be considered for future openings, you must apply to a position in order to be invited to retake the test.
