Vigilance matters when it comes to natural gas pipeline safety

We have stringent and thorough inspection procedures in place to ensure the safety and integrity of the pipelines that bring natural gas into your home for heating and cooking. On rare occasions, pipeline damage can occur, resulting in a serious emergency. The most common causes of damage are both natural (earthquake, flood, age) and man-made (homeowner digging in the yard, construction worker hitting a pipeline).

No matter the cause, if you have a pipeline emergency or suspect a gas leak:

  • Don’t touch any electrical switches – including light switches – or anything else that could cause a spark.
  • Don’t start your car.
  • Don’t use your phone near your home. Get away from the house or the area immediately and then call LG&E at 502-589-1444. (Call 800-331-7370 outside Louisville.) Also, call 911 to report the situation.

Signs of a possible leak include odor (a rotten egg smell); a hissing sound; or blowing dust, bubbling water or discolored vegetation in the area near the pipeline.
