Here are some changes to the Home Energy Assistance program

If you’ve ever received an energy bill you cannot pay, assistance may be available for income-eligible customers through Kentucky’s Home Energy Assistance (HEA) program.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission recently conducted a comprehensive review of the state’s HEA programs. As a result, some programs are being revised to provide consistency across the state.

Key change for KU is:

  • Eligibility up to 200% of federal poverty level.

Key changes for LG&E are:

  • Eligibility up to 200% of federal poverty level
  • Benefit payments for seven months (electric only and combination electric and gas customers); benefit payments for four months (gas only customers)

A major change for LG&E customers is that Community Action Kentucky and local community action agencies will be administering the revised HEA program, which replaces the HEA/ASAP program previously administered by Affordable Energy Corporation.

While existing program benefits will continue through December 2020, sign-ups for the revised program are in conjunction with LIHEAP Subsidy (October through December) at your local community action agency. Initial program participant selection will take place in late December with the first benefit payments being applied in January 2021. Eligible participants who are not initially selected will be placed on a waiting list.
