The next big storm could be just around the corner; don’t be caught unprepared

Dangerous wind. Torrential rain. Lightning. Hail. Summer storms can produce some of the most threatening weather we face each year. With June being National Safety Month, now’s the time to make a checklist so you are prepared when a fierce storm strikes.

Make sure you have an emergency kit with:

  • Water and nonperishable food.
  • First-aid materials, including prescription medications.
  • A battery-operated radio – we recommend buying a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Weather Radio so you can stay abreast of weather warnings.
  • At least one flashlight.
  • Fully charged cellphone and a battery-powered charger.
  • Extra batteries.

Other ways to stay safe and prepared ahead of severe weather include:

  • Shutting off appliances and electronics to help avoid damage. (Keep a light on so you know when power is restored if there is an outage.)
  • Using our mobile app to report an outage and keep track of power restoration if there is an outage. You can also text OUTAGE to 454358 (4LGEKU).
  • Never taking a bath or shower during a storm.
  • Keeping your car gassed up – at least half a tank is recommended.
  • Planning where you can stay in the event of an extended emergency.

It’s also a good idea to make sure any flammable liquids such as gas, paint thinner and solvents are properly stored. They should be kept outside your home and in approved safety cans only.

Finally, always avoid downed power lines. If you see one, call us to report it.
