Higher temps, higher bills: How to save energy – and money – this summer

With the heat of summer now here, temperatures aren’t the only things going up. Those soaring temps can also bring higher costs on your monthly bill as your air conditioner works overtime to keep you comfortable. Here are tips for saving energy – and money – this season.

  • Don’t let the sun in: During the hottest parts of the day, close any blinds, curtains and drapes.
  • Try turning your thermostat up a couple of degrees. (Programmable thermostats can save as much as 10% on your yearly energy use.)

To see the temperature extremes that might affect your bill, check out our weather calendar. It shows the average daily temperature in your general area, which you can then compare to the average daily temperatures from previous years.

Another simple way to save energy this season is to take some of the heat out of your kitchen, which is generally the hottest room in the house.

  • Summertime is grill time! Burgers, veggies, kabobs or chops are perfect for grilling outside, away from the kitchen.
  • Instead of using the oven or stove, make meals using slow cookers, air fryers or the microwave.
  • Make sandwiches and take the family outside for a backyard picnic.
