Powering the next generation

Enjoy working outdoors and not afraid of heights? April is National Lineman Appreciation Month, and we are highlighting our partnership with local colleges that offer line tech training programs. After entering the field, line technicians can grow their careers into roles such as journeyman, crew leader or supervisor.

Kentucky Community & Technical College offers line tech training at eight of its campuses across the state: Louisville, Maysville, Somerset, Gateway (Florence), Hazard, Big Sandy, Ashland, Southeast and Madisonville. Each program is unique, but they all instruct students on subjects such as constructing a power line, climbing techniques, bucket truck operation and work safety.

Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) in Big Stone Gap, Va., offers a Power Lineman program that equips students with the foundational skills necessary to enter the electrical field as a line technician. These skills include power pole climbing skills, knowledge of the basic tools and materials involved with the electrical line crafts, general construction standards, basic rigging principles and basic electrical theory that is specific to this trade. Classes include hands-on training and can be completed in about 15 weeks.
