We’re committed to sustainable energy and the environment

February 27, 2020

Our commitment to renewable energy sources and environmental protection never wavers. One example is our E.W. Brown Solar Facility in Harrodsburg – the largest solar facility in Kentucky. The 45,000-panel, 50-acre site generates enough energy per year to power nearly 1,500 homes using an average of 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month.

Visit lge-ku.com/live-solar-generation to see the facility’s minute-by-minute power generation (as well as historical data) and how the energy output varies based on the amount of sun or clouds on any given day.

This spring sheep will be added to the site to help keep the grass trimmed around the solar panels. The sheep will allow us to rely less on mowers and weed eaters, which will in turn reduce emissions from that equipment and lower maintenance costs.

Additionally, we’re planting 40 species of Kentucky native grasses and flowers at the E.W. Brown Solar Facility to create a natural habitat that will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Not only does this help address population declines among pollinators, it will also help reduce water runoff, soil erosion and overall maintenance costs.
