A simple task to help ensure safety for yourself and those you love

September 30, 2021

Summer is in the rearview mirror, the weather is getting cooler and we’re spending more time indoors. That’s why this time of year we are reminded to make sure we have fresh batteries in our carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. (October is Fire Prevention Month.)

Batteries should be replaced every year and tested once a month. And the National Safety Council says smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors replaced every five years.

Making sure those detectors are in working order is simple and can be a lifesaver in the event of a fire or a CO2 leak. A fire can spread quickly, and carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible.

One more thing: It’s a good idea to have an escape plan in case an alarm sounds. Designate a spot outside your home where your family will meet so you’ll know everyone is out and safe.
