When summer projects heat up, keep power lines in mind

May 19, 2025

Summer is the season for outdoor projects. If you’re about to start work on your own property near power lines, help avoid potential accidents or injury by having our company “cover” or “drop” the electric lines.

Cover lines

Covering the lines means temporarily wrapping them in an insulated cover. Power will not be disrupted when lines are covered, and this service is generally provided at no charge. Just be sure to make your request at least three business days before the service is needed.

Remember that during emergency events, such as storm recovery efforts, these requests may take longer to fulfill. Need to schedule the service for a project planned in the future? Make your request ahead of time for the date of the project, and our team will contact you closer to the requested date to schedule the service.

Finally, it’s important to always assume that power lines are energized. Even if electrical lines are covered, be sure to keep yourself, other people, building materials and tools away from them to avoid risk of injury.

Drop lines

Customers can also request that we “drop” power lines near their projects. This means electrical lines are taken down so work can be completed safely. This service is usually required when equipment, materials or other items are too tall to sufficiently fit underneath nearby power lines.

As with line covering, be sure to make your line dropping request at least three days prior to the service being needed. And never schedule any work on your project until you hear back from us.

Of course, there are some circumstances where dropping lines may not be practical. In these cases, we’ll discuss other potential options with our customers that may allow the work to proceed safely.

Request the work

To request line covering or dropping, first sign in to your online account (My Account) at my.lge-ku.com. Then click on Service Order in the Service Orders tile or click on Additional Services in the navigation bar. (Fees will apply for dropping lines depending on your area.)

Once your work is completed, let us know. We’ll either uncover covered lines or reconnect dropped lines. (In most cases, if we haven’t heard from you, we’ll uncover covered lines within approximately 45 days. If more time is needed, please let us know. Dropped lines will only be reconnected once we are contacted.)

Regardless of the service requested, please note that coordinating with us is not a substitute for obtaining any required permits. Likewise, obtaining a building permit does not mean work can be performed near power lines without consulting with our team first.
