Metro Match program to raise heating assistance funds for low-income residents

January 11, 2010

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Council and Louisville Gas and Electric Company have partnered to support a program that will make it easier for low-income residents to pay heating bills.

Dubbed "Metro Match," the program encourages the 15 members of the Association of Community Ministries to raise up to $7,000 in private donations and have those contributions matched $1-for-$1 by Metro Council members and LG&E.

The program will be operated and managed by Louisville-area Community Ministries. Funds will be distributed at the 15 Community Ministries based on income; however, income guidelines are less restrictive than other programs.

"Given the current state of the economy, area Community Ministries are facing record requests from those in need," said Council member Tina Ward-Pugh, D-9th District, who led the effort to develop the program. "We're very pleased that LG&E is doing their part to help maximize our donations to these ministries and further help the community's disadvantaged."

"LG&E and our employees have a strong commitment to the communities we serve and to customers who find themselves in difficult circumstances," added Laura Douglas, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility & Community Affairs for E.ON U.S. "We're appreciative of the Louisville Metro Council's support of our efforts to help those least able to pay their energy bills."

The program will begin today and will last through April. Those interested in applying for funds should contact one of the 15 Louisville-area Community Ministries, who will qualify applicants for assistance. Visit www.louisvilleministries.org for a listing of the area's Community Ministries.
