More than 50 area nonprofit organizations receive support for critical programs and services
(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) – Area nonprofits are receiving nearly $2 million through support from employees and retirees of Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company, the LG&E and KU Foundation and IBEW Local 2100. The funds were raised through the utilities’ annual employee-led charitable giving campaign, the Power of One, which has now contributed more than $35 million since 2005.
Financial contributions this year are being allocated to more than 50 nonprofit organizations overseeing critical community programs and services to meet individuals’ basic needs, support education and the arts, and provide access to health care services. They represent nearly all 120 counties across Kentucky, as well as parts of Virginia and Indiana.
“Giving back to the communities where we live and work is a long-standing part of our company culture. The organizations supported through our Power of One campaign are helping our neighbors, friends and fellow community members,” said Robert Conroy, vice president of State Regulation & Rates at LG&E and KU and the 2024 Power of One co-chair. “We’re incredibly proud of our employees’ and retirees’ steadfast commitment to the campaign, supporting individuals in their times of need and empowering students through the arts and education.”
Local United Ways spanning from Louisville and central Kentucky to Paducah, Ky., and Abingdon, Va. — as well as nonprofit organizations Fund for the Arts and Crusade for Children — are among those receiving financial support through the Power of One.
“LG&E and KU employee contributions are deployed in the Kentucky counties we serve to create Thriving Kids, Strong Households and an Equitable Community. Initiatives such as providing access to affordable, quality childcare, 2-1-1 emergency helpline, Ages and Stages developmental screenings, United Neighborhoods and Beyond Buzzwords would not be possible without the generous support of LG&E and KU and its employees,” said Matt Simons, Metro United Way director, Corporate Giving. “LGE and KU is the largest supporter of Metro United Way work amongst the region’s employers. Without their support, Metro United Way would not be in a position to expand its reach and programs to our Kentucky counties.”
“The generous contributions provided by LG&E and KU and employee pledges are strategically allocated by local donors to support high-impact programs focused on education, financial stability, and health—the building blocks of a thriving community,” said United Way of Western Kentucky CEO Betsy Burkeen. “The United Way of Western Kentucky works closely with local nonprofit partners to ensure that every dollar is invested where it can make the greatest difference, addressing the most pressing needs of individuals and families across our region.”
“The Power of One campaign exemplifies the incredible impact individuals can make when they come together for a common cause,” Burkeen continued. “Through this campaign, LG&E and KU employees demonstrate their commitment to creating lasting change, helping us expand essential services, fund innovative solutions, and uplift those in need. Their support fuels our mission, allowing us to drive meaningful progress and improve lives across Western Kentucky.”
LG&E and KU’s Power of One is also part of the companywide campaign led by parent company PPL Corporation. Employees and retirees from PPL Corporation and its subsidiaries, LG&E and KU, PPL Electric Utilities and Rhode Island Energy contributed to the companywide campaign. Together with matching contributions from PPL’s affiliated foundations, the campaign raised nearly $9 million to support nearly 500 local nonprofit organizations this year.
