Targeted Tree and Vegetation Program

In 2026, we’re launching a targeted vegetation management initiative within our service territory. This work is part of our broader effort to reduce power outages and improve service for our customers.

As part of this ongoing work, we’re enhancing our approach by using data to identify high-risk trees and overgrowth that are most likely to interfere with power lines and cause outages. This helps us focus resources where they will deliver the greatest reliability improvements for customers.

More than 30% of customer outages are caused by vegetation, and that number has increased as severe weather events have become more frequent and intense. In fact, tree-related outages have risen by more than 50% over the past decade, with roughly 70% of them caused by trees located outside the utility right-of-way falling into lines.

Data-Driven Targeting

We’re using a data-driven strategy to identify and prioritize:

  • Areas with a history of outages caused by high-risk trees
  • Areas where a single outage could affect a large number of customers.
  • Locations where we anticipate shows both a high likelihood of vegetation-caused outages and a high customer-impact potential.

This approach ensures resources are deployed efficiently and where they provide the greatest reliability benefit under both “blue-sky” and severe weather conditions. Removing healthy—but high-risk—trees before failure reduces system exposure and helps prevent significant damage.

How We Perform Our Work

For both distribution and transmission line clearance, our crews will take great care when performing this work.

  • We follow industry best practices and safety standards
  • We’re committed to minimizing any disruption.
  • After work is completed, our crews will do their best to leave the area as they found it—or better.

We also recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy and beautiful urban tree canopy.

  • In neighborhoods where extensive vegetation work is performed, we’re encouraging local replanting efforts through our Plant for the Planet program.
  • This initiative offers grants for community tree planting projects to help rebalance and restore the canopy—contributing to long-term beauty, shade, and environmental health.

Customers in affected focus areas will receive targeted communications before work begins so they know what to expect and understand the benefits. Broader outreach to community organizations and local stakeholders will also take place to ensure questions are answered early and to support a positive customer experience.

We know how much you rely on your electric service every day. That’s why we’re doing this work thoughtfully and respectfully, with safety, reliability, and customer care leading every decision.
