Beware: Scammers never rest, so keep a sharp eye out

Scammers are always looking for new ways to steal your money. Each November, Utilities United Against Scams, of which we are a member, conducts an annual awareness campaign to help protect consumers.

A current scam has crooks posing as utility representatives and offering to pay your utility bill at a discount, up to 50% off, for example. They ask for your account number and address and use a fraudulent credit card or a similar method to “pay” the utility the total amount of your bill. The crooks have you call the utility to confirm the payment, and then have you pay the scammers a discounted portion of the bill. After you’ve already paid the scammers, the fraud is discovered by the utility. You still owe the total payment, and the scammers are gone with your money.

This scam occurs by phone and has also shown up on Facebook.

It’s extremely important to know that we will NEVER request or invite payment via social media channels. We also NEVER call or email to demand payment, a credit or debit card number, or any other personal identification. You can easily check your account balance by signing in to your online account at my.lge-ku.com. Or use our automated system by calling us and pressing 1-2-1.

Remember, if you ever think you may have been a victim of possible fraud, you should contact the police.
