Don’t let this deadly gas catch you by surprise

Colder weather means furnaces and fireplaces will be getting used more. And, of course, we will all be spending more time indoors. As a result, the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is greater over the next few months. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous because it is odorless and colorless, rendering it basically undetectable. Exposure to high levels of the gas can be fatal, with most victims dying in their sleep. The best form of protection is to install a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector outside every bedroom. Be sure to replace the batteries yearly.

Here are some other tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of this dangerous gas.

  • Have your furnace, fireplace and water heater checked out by a qualified professional to make sure there are no leaks.
  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or any other gas, propane, natural gas or charcoal device indoors – including a garage or a basement. Only use them outdoors in areas that are well ventilated.
  • Never turn on a gas stove just to provide heat.
  • Make sure all gas appliances are vented properly.
  • Be sure the damper is open before lighting the fireplace. After the fire is out, wait a few minutes or even a few hours before closing the damper.
  • Never leave a car running in a closed garage.
