Clean your clothes while making a clean break from higher energy bills

Two of the most-used appliances in your home are likely your washing machine and dryer. So finding ways to use less energy while doing the laundry can help lower your monthly energy bill. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Cold is gold – Use cold water as often as possible; 90 percent of energy used by washing machines goes to heating water.
  • Don’t go halfway – Wash and dry full loads. Washing machines use about the same amount of water no matter how many items you’re washing.
  • Need a new one? – If you’re in the market for a new washer, buy one with the ENERGY STAR® certification.
  • A clean filter is a happy (and more efficient) filter – Be sure to clean the dryer’s lint filter after every load.
  • Here’s a hint, check your vent – The outdoor dryer exhaust vent should open and close easily. If it doesn’t, you should replace to keep outside air from getting into your dryer.
  • Who needs a dryer, anyway? – When the weather is good, hang clothes outside to dry. You can’t be much more energy-efficient than using the sun.
