Nothing to kid about: Make sure your detectors are in tip-top shape

House fires and carbon monoxide leaks are life-and-death matters. That’s why it’s vitally important for you to have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. As we head into the winter months, you’ll be spending more time indoors, and you need to be sure your detectors are working properly.

Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested once a month, and their batteries should be changed every year. You should get new smoke detectors every 10 years and new carbon monoxide detectors every five years, according to the National Safety Council.

The detectors give you peace of mind by providing an extra level of protection for you and your family. Those detectors could save your life if there’s a fire or a carbon monoxide leak in the middle of the night. Carbon monoxide (CO) is especially dangerous because it is odorless and colorless. A few precious seconds of warning can make all the difference.
