Energy Insights: What is a generating station?

While we all enjoy the electricity that powers our homes and businesses, have you ever thought about how that electricity is produced? That’s where our diverse fleet of generating stations comes into play.

In the most basic sense, generating stations turn one form of energy into electricity using a generator. Energy sources for generating stations can include traditional fuel sources like coal or natural gas, or other natural resources like wind or water. Once that energy source is harnessed, it will then typically drive a turbine to generate the electricity that eventually makes its way to you.

Another energy source – solar power – does not use a turbine at all, instead turning sunlight directly into electricity via large panels of solar cells. These cells absorb the photons in sunlight and ultimately convert them into usable electricity.

We have one of the most reliable generation fleets in the industry, and our generating stations include everything from two 100-year-old hydroelectric plants to the most advanced natural gas combined-cycle units. We are unique in that we produce our own electricity through a diverse mix of sources, including natural gas, water, solar, wind and clean-burning coal (that meets or exceeds all regulatory requirements). That means we do not have to rely on purchasing electricity from outside sources and, in turn, results in better reliability, increased efficiency and affordable power for you.
