Data centers and electric costs: What customers should know

As conversations around data centers continue to grow across our service territory, many customers understandably have questions about what these projects could mean for electric costs, reliability and our communities.

We believe it’s important to provide clear, transparent information about how we plan for growth and protect customers along the way.

What is a data center?
Data centers are facilities filled with computers and servers that process and store digital information. They support many of the online services people use every day...from streaming movies and music, sending text messages and storing photos in the cloud to mobile banking, healthcare systems, online shopping and artificial intelligence tools.

Why is our service territory seeing more interest?
Our areas are attracting interest from data center developers for many of the same reasons it has attracted major industries for decades: reliable electric service, strong energy infrastructure, competitive rates, a skilled workforce, a central location and a business-friendly environment.

We have safely and reliably served large energy users for more than a century, and data centers are another type of large customer. As with any customer, we have an obligation to serve them while planning responsibly for the needs of all customers.

Will data centers make my monthly bill go up?
Large energy users, including data centers, are responsible for paying for infrastructure that’s only serving them. Those costs are not borne by everyday residential customers. As with any growth in our service area, we carefully plan to maintain safe, reliable and affordable service at the lowest reasonable cost.
