Vivian Moore

Meet Vivian Moore:  One of our many community volunteers.

What is the organization where you volunteer?

William Wells Brown Neighborhood Association

How long have you volunteered there?

Four years

What does the organization do?

It is a nonprofit organization focused on improving quality of life for residents, partners and businesses in Lexington’s East End.

What do you do as a volunteer there?

I help coordinate an annual back-to-school carnival to raise donations for school supplies and backpacks for children whose parents may not be able to afford them. Other activities include providing food for needy children to take home for the weekend and an annual Say No To Bullying fall festival.

How did you become aware of the organization?

My fiancé volunteers there.

Do you have a personal reason for volunteering at this organization?

I grew up in the projects in the East End. When I see those mothers struggling, that’s my mother and other mothers I witnessed as a child. When I see children who don’t have the basic necessities, that’s me, my brother and all the other children I grew up with.

What would you say to someone who asks why they should volunteer?

There are people out there who need them. People who just need to know that somebody cares.

Does the organization have a specific need during the holidays?

The children in this community need hats, gloves and socks. We witness children every day walking to school without these articles, and it is heartbreaking.
