Energy-saving tips for lowering your usage…and bills!

September 16, 2024

In honor of October being National Energy Awareness Month, let’s look at some top tips to help you save energy – and money – any time of year.

  • Seal out the outside – Using caulking around doors and windows helps keep out hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter. Not only will you feel more comfortable, but your HVAC system will have less work to do.
  • Get programmable, stat – A programmable thermostat can improve efficiency by heating and cooling your home on your schedule, only when you need it (and not when you don’t).
  • Wrap that water heater – Insulating your water heater allows it to retain heat for longer, using less energy and saving you money. Water heater blankets can be found at most home improvement stores.
  • Make the switch – Select LED bulbs for your home. They use 75% less energy.
  • Go unplugged – You know all those household items that stay plugged in but only get used randomly? Think toasters, phone chargers, fans, coffee makers, etc. Unplugging these items when they are not in use can add up to real savings on your monthly bills.
  • Put it in reverse – Remember to adjust ceiling fans to rotate clockwise in the winter and counterclockwise in summer. These are just a few of the ways you can save energy, save money and help the environment.
