Keep holidays safe and bright

October 28, 2026

‘Tis the season for festive displays and holiday gatherings. Keep safety top of mind with these simple tips to protect your home from electrical and fire hazards:

  • Inspect decorations: Check light strands for frayed wires or cracked sockets and discard damaged sets. Use energy-efficient LED lights, which run much cooler than incandescent bulbs.
  • Avoid overloading: Do not plug too many lights or appliances into a single outlet or extension cord. Always follow manufacturer wattage guidelines.
  • Clear heat sources: Keep live trees, decorations and gifts at least three feet away from fireplaces, space heaters and candles. Water live trees daily.
  • Decorate safely outdoors: Hang outdoor lights during daylight and keep ladders and tools at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines.
  • Power down: Unplug light strands and turn off space heaters before going to sleep or leaving home.
