Less usage, lower bills: Tips to save energy – and money – this winter

November 19, 2024

Dropping temperatures can mean a sharp rise in energy usage...and utility costs. If you’re looking for ways to save energy this winter, here are a few useful tips that could help keep some green in your pocket.

  • Make sure your home is well-insulated. Check places like attics, exterior or basement walls, crawl spaces, etc.
  • Doors and windows are common areas for cold to creep in. Add additional caulking and/or weather stripping to ensure a tight seal.
  • Keep blinds, shades or drapes open during the day to allow in warm sunlight.
  • If needed, replace furnace filters per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Try turning your thermostat down a degree or two. This will give your heating unit a break and save energy, too. Also consider installing a programmable thermostat if you haven’t already.
