Spring is here, and that means some of our most valuable employees are hungry to get back on the job. Literally. That’s right...our sheep have returned! Each spring, sheep are brought in to maintain vegetation around the solar field at the E.W. Brown Generating Station in Harrodsburg, Ky. Totaling more than 200 sheep, this flock of four-legged lawnmowers provides an environmentally friendly (not to mention adorable) solution for keeping the 50-acre site clear of tall vegetation that could grow over the panels. This allows our solar array to operate as efficiently as possible. And they’ll stay hard at work through the summer before returning this fall to their home at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a nonprofit organization in Mercer County and Kentucky’s largest historical landmark.
Protecting the flock are Willow and Maple, two specially trained Great Pyrenees also on loan from Shaker Village, who help keep the sheep safe from potential predators – including coyotes.
Want to see the flock at work? Check out our “Ewetube” channel by visiting lge-ku.com/sheep now through summer. “Ewe” will also love our children’s book about a day-in-the-life of Levi The Lamb, one of the sheep at our E.W. Brown solar facility. All proceeds from the book, which can be purchased online at shop.shakervillageky.org, benefit Shaker Village.
Speaking of our solar array, supporting the growth of solar power is a good thing. Earning bill credits while doing so is even better! That’s the idea behind our Solar Share program.
Here’s how it works: For less than 20 cents a day, you can avoid the upfront installation costs and long-term maintenance of a private solar system. Then, once the array section that contains your subscribed shares begins producing energy, you’ll begin receiving a monthly bill credit, based on the amount of actual solar energy generated by the facility.
Customers can enroll in Solar Share three ways: online through My Account, via our online form or by calling 800-356-5467. Visit lge-ku.com/solar to learn more.
